In 1980, Carlo Crocco defied convention by creating a solid gold watch equipped with the first natural rubber strap. He named this watch Hublot after the French word for porthole, which the design resembled. The watch was a commercial success, and Hublot solidified its place in the watch industry. In 2004, Jean-Claude Biver, a businessman and watchmaker who revived Blancpain and worked for both Audemars Piguet and Omega, became CEO of the company. A year later, Hublot launched the iconic Big Bang, a sports watch inspired by the original Hublot from 1980. The watch collected numerous accolades, including the Best Design Prize at the 2005 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève. Biver believed the business should play to its early strength: the innovative use of materials. The company refers to this as the "Art of Fusion." In 2008, Hublot sold to LVMH. The company is known for its partnerships with Ferrari and professional soccer.
Product Line Overview
Under the leadership of Jean-Claude Biver, a veteran of the watch industry who famously values company history, Hublot re-established its brand identity according to its original guiding principles. Across collections, Hublot consistently alludes to the porthole design of the company's first watch, incorporating exposed screws on the bezel. The design philosophy of the brand also plays homage to the innovative use of rubber and gold which first launched the company. The innovative incorporation of materials such as rubber, titanium, steel, sapphire, and ceramic, referred to as the "Art of Fusion," shapes many of Hublot's bold aesthetic choices. Additionally, the company's partnerships with individuals, professional soccer, and Ferrari have generated numerous culturally relevant watches.
Hublot's iconic flagship model, the Big Bang, is distinguished by integrated rubber straps and a porthole-inspired case with exposed screws. The Big Bang can be found in several configurations under sub-collections. Each offers watches in numerous case diameters ranging from 45 to 38 millimeters. The Big Bang Original and 3-Hands have the simplest designs of these sub-collections. The Original offers chronograph variations while the 3-Hands is exclusively available in time-only movements. The Unico is available in colorful ceramic variations with flyback chronograph movements. The Meca-10 features skeletonized dials and movements offering a power reserve of 10 days. The Big Bang Complications sub-collection includes tourbillons and other highly complicated movements.
As the name suggests, the Bigger Bang Collection provides the design of the Big Bang in a larger package. The "Shaped" Collection offers variations of the Big Bang in several case shapes. These offerings include the Square Bang and the tonneau-shaped Spirit of Big Bang. The latter is available in chronograph, Meca-10, tourbillon, and 3-hands movement variations.
The Classic Fusion Collection stays most loyal to the original Hublot. Exposed screws and a clean dial with simple indexes define the timeless design. The Classic Fusion can also be found in chronograph, moonphase, and highly-faceted "Orlinski" variations.
The MP (masterpiece) Collection is distinguished by two complementary components: bold, unconventional designs and highly complicated movements. Often, the complexity of the movement plays a pivotal role in the design. The MP-09, for instance, features an elongated bezel around six o'clock to accommodate a bi-axis tourbillon. The movement of the MP-11 boasts seven barrels along a horizontal axis which give the caliber a two week power reserve.
